How it is calculated
Your name number is the total of the letter values in your name, reduced to a single digit. In the Chaldean system, which this calculator uses, letters carry values from 1 to 8:
- 1: A, I, J, Q, Y
- 2: B, K, R
- 3: C, G, L, S
- 4: D, M, T
- 5: E, H, N, X
- 6: U, V, W
- 7: O, Z
- 8: F, P
No letter is given 9, which the tradition treats as a sacred number.
Worked example: ANITA SHARMA
- ANITA: 1 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 12
- SHARMA: 3 + 5 + 1 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 16
- Total: 12 + 16 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
The 28 is the compound number, which some practitioners also read. The name number is 1.
Every letter you write is counted, including initials, while spaces and dots are ignored. So "A. Sharma" gives 1 + 16 = 17, which reduces to 8, not 1. Use the name exactly as you write it.
The Pythagorean system gives letters values from 1 to 9 in alphabetical order (A = 1 … I = 9, then J = 1 again). In that system the same name totals 42 and reduces to 6. A name number only makes sense when you know which system produced it.
How to read your result
Traditionally, the name number is read as the way you come across and how others respond to you: the part of you that your name carries into the world. It uses the same planetary links as the birth numbers, from 1 for the Sun to 9 for Mars. A name can total 9 even though no single letter is worth 9.
The next step is to compare it with your Mulank and Bhagyank. Numbers are traditionally grouped as friendly, neutral or challenging to one another, though books differ on the details. A name number that harmonises with your birth numbers is considered supportive.
A number that does not harmonise is not a flaw in your name, and it is no reason to change your documents. Read it as an indication for reflection, not a reading.
